Socialism has been good for America

I wrote the following letter to the Morrison County Record this week . . .

Dear Editor:

Recently Donald Trump has been saying how evil socialism is. He says he opposes socialism and that it won’t come to America on his watch. But do you believe that a free high school education is socialism? I do! And I think we need more socialism like that in this country. We need free college education for all Americans. Educating our children and young adults will be a good investment in our great countries future. Lets make America great again by giving our young people  a great education. When the socialistic GI bill educated veterans we had a tremendous spurt of economic growth when those young people entered the economy. Do you believe Soial Security is socialistic? I do! And we need to expand it. Do you believe Medicare is socialistic? I do! And we need Medicare for all. Socialism has been good for America. We need more of it - not less.

Some of the most visionary people in Congress today are Socialists. Take Rep. Ocasio - Cortez and the Green New Deal or Rep. Jaypal  and her sweeping Medicare for All legislation that she introduced this week.

On the more local front, two members of the Democratic Socialists of America were elected to the Chicago City Council this week.

And in Minnesota the Twin Cities DSA  has bravely come out in support of Rep. Omar's honest criticism of the caustic effect the Israeli lobby has on democracy and American foreign affairs.

Here's Twin Cities DSA statement regarding Rep. Omar:

"We stand with Ilhan Omar against the reactionary smears being thrown at her. Conflating criticism of the Israeli state and its brutal regime with anti-Semitism is a neoconservative con that we refuse to fall for.

Less than two weeks ago, the United States Senate unceremoniously voted 74-19 to curtail civil liberties and free speech by opening the door for local governments to punish supporters of the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement.

And in last week’s State of the Union speech, president Trump gave lip service to the slain members of the Tree of Life Synagogue shortly after a cruel, paranoid lie about the ‘violence’ Americans face from people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border- the same conspiracy theory that drove that very act of hate in Pittsburgh.

It’s our duty as socialists to oppose all forms of racism, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism and stand in solidarity with the oppressed workers of the entire globe. It’s also our duty to stand strong against those who would divide us through opportunistic attacks and falsehoods."

If you're looking for bold, honest, and progressive solutions, American socialism has a solid historical footing and is the organization to look to for the future.

Senator Gazelka: Prepare for End Times

Review by John King “Marketplace Ministers are part of how the Lord will reach the peoples of the earth in these last days.” Author Paul Gazelka wrote this astonishing sentence near the conclusion of his 2003 book, Marketplace Ministers , but it is a good place to start here because it so neatly encapsulates the message of the book which is that business people, by spreading the Gospel, are in a unique position to prepare us, for the end of the world.   Gazelka, an insurance salesman in Baxter, Minnesota, devotes chapters one through four to the story of his religious calling and how he came to adopt the “marketplace” as his personal ministry.  He goes to some length, relying in part on the “Fivefold Path” from Ephesians to convince the reader that the marketplace is a legitimate pulpit to spread the Word.  The remainder of the book, using personal anecdotes and biblical passages, he explains how a marketplace ministry would function and what its usefulness w...

Rodale Institute aims to grow the regenerative organic movement through research, farmer training, and consumer education. On our si...

Let us all walk in the foot steps of John Lewis

By John King In Selma, Alabama, on Sunday, March 7, 1965, John Lewis, standing in the lead of a long line of marchers, looked down from the crest of The Edmund Pettus Bridge at the line of police armed with clubs, whips and truncheons and said, “I am going to die here.” Lewis intended to lead the marchers from Selma to the capital Montgomery, to demand access to voting for Black people in Alabama. Sheriff Jim Clark lowered his gas mask and led the deputies, some on horseback and some on foot, into the line of marchers. Under swinging clubs and hooves trampling, Lewis was the first to go down. Women and children were not spared. Choking and blinded by tear gas, they were struck by clubs and truncheons wrapped with barbed wire. Lewis, with a fractured skull and a severe concussion, almost did die. The nearby Good Samaritan Hospital did not have enough beds to care for the injured marchers. A nation watched in horror as news footage of that bloody day appeared on T...
