Last Saturday students and adults in Willmar, in Central Minnesota, joined together in a city park to discuss how climate change was affecting their lives and what they could do about it. They discussed the importance of taking personal responsibility for their carbon foot print by consuming less, driving less, flying less, and eating a bit lower on the food chain. They also acknowledged that their personal actions won't be enough and that governments at all levels need to adapt policies to reduce consumption of fossil fuels.
The Willmar event, initiated by the high school group known as Voice, was mirrored by similar events across Central Minnesota in places like Morris, St. Joseph, and St. Cloud.
Meanwhile, in Minneapolis and there abouts, a group of people have been gathering in strategic locations to hold Cargill accountable for its role in trashing the Amazon forest for soy bean production. Last Thursday, September 26th, a group of about 30 gathered in front of the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Minneapolis. They chanted such things as "The Amazon's in flames! We're out in force and naming names!" as people went into the Cargill sponsored "Women in Agribusiness" event. They'll be at it again this coming Thursday at a Cargill sponsored event at the U of MN McNamara Alumni Center from 5:30-6:30 pm.
