Morris MN Climate Strike

A team of Morris youth is organizing a West Central MN Climate Strike! For two days, we invite people to strike from school or work and gather at Green River park to demand transformative action on the climate crisis.

This event will take place on Thursday, September 19th and Friday, September 20th, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Strike day one, Thursday, will be focused on learning about how the climate crisis is affecting West Central MN and what steps the Morris Model is taking to combat this. Strike day two, Friday, will be action focused and together as a group we will write letters to representatives, county commissioners, and community leaders voicing our support of transformative climate action. (see update below)

Share Far & Wide
I have attached our event poster below for you to share with your networks. I challenge you to forward this email to one person who you think might benefit from this strike. Or, even better, forward this to a listserv or group you are a part of! Active support in the form of publicity is extremely important to us!
We have strike buttons as well. If you would like one let me know and I can get one to you!

Class Cancellation
If you are a teacher/professor who has canceled/restructured your classes to allow your students to strike, THANK YOU. This strike is about youth calling adults to take transformative action on climate change, we thank you for standing with us.
If you are thinking about canceling/restructuring your class but have questions, please ask away! I can get you in contact with others who are doing it and might be able to support you.

Transportation
If there are people who cannot get to Green River Park please let them know about the Morris Transit. There will be a bus leaving from campus at 1:00 PM both days and for $1.25 folks can ride the bus to the park. The Transit can also pick up folks anywhere else in town to drop them off if they call ahead to schedule a ride at (320) 589-1000.

We were in the News!
Teresa and I were invited to speak on KMRS Community Connection, listen here.
Did you see our Letters to the Editor in last week's Stevens County Times? Check them out! (they are not available digitally yet, but hopefully they will be soon)

THE EVENT IS GROWING
I am not surprised this event has shown so much momentum in the past week, people in this area clearly care about climate change and the voices of young people. I am, however, thrilled to be a part of this momentum. Folks have emailed me asking if they can post about this event on their websites, have told me they are canceling class and bringing their students, have told me that they will be coming to strike from Elbow Lake, our trash dissection is with a friend from the other side of the country, how cool! This is for sure the event of the season.
If you have told people about this event, shared your resources with the planning team, been on the planning team, RSVPd on Facebook or strikewithus.org, hung a poster on your office door, or waved at us during the Prairie Pioneer Days parade, THANK YOU.
Exciting, fun, and impactful work is done when people come together to get the job done, we are grateful that you are our people!

Let me know if you have any further questions, concerns, ideas, or support you would like to share in these final days before the strike.

In Solidarity,
Syd

Let us all walk in the foot steps of John Lewis

By John King In Selma, Alabama, on Sunday, March 7, 1965, John Lewis, standing in the lead of a long line of marchers, looked down from the crest of The Edmund Pettus Bridge at the line of police armed with clubs, whips and truncheons and said, “I am going to die here.” Lewis intended to lead the marchers from Selma to the capital Montgomery, to demand access to voting for Black people in Alabama. Sheriff Jim Clark lowered his gas mask and led the deputies, some on horseback and some on foot, into the line of marchers. Under swinging clubs and hooves trampling, Lewis was the first to go down. Women and children were not spared. Choking and blinded by tear gas, they were struck by clubs and truncheons wrapped with barbed wire. Lewis, with a fractured skull and a severe concussion, almost did die. The nearby Good Samaritan Hospital did not have enough beds to care for the injured marchers. A nation watched in horror as news footage of that bloody day appeared on T

More Republican dirty tricks

As a Blue Dog Corporate Democrat, 7th District Rep. Collin Peterson’s votes in Congress go against the beliefs and convictions of progressive voters in our district. I’m one of those progressive 7th District voters. Like most average voters I rarely actually encounter my Member of Congress. However, I recall three encounters with Rep. Peterson over the many years I’ve been stuck with him. I met him at Mikey’s Restaurant, on Main Street in Long Prairie, when he was first campaigning for a seat in Congress. We were both young then and he was full of energy and inspired in me a sense of hope for positive change. Besides, I’d met the Republican incumbent. He was an older man who, it seemed, was operating on dead batteries. I was happy to vote for the energetic Peterson. Some years later I was a delegate to the DFL District convention in Bemidji. Peterson opposed a woman’s right to choose abortion. He was being challenged by a woman who supported the right to that choice. I gave my

Step aside Republicans; Minnesotans want electric vehicles

Late last month Senator Paul Gazelka, the Republican leader of the Senate, told the Minnesota Reformer that the Republican controlled Senate would likely fire the acting Commissioner of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Laura Bishop, if the Agency, at the behest of the Governor, went ahead with the Clean Car Rule. The rule would require automakers to increase the number of electric vehicles they deliver to Minnesota auto dealers. Gazelka told The Reformer that he’d had “a conversation” with Bishop about the rule. Bishop has not been confirmed by the Senate. Gazelka, and his Republican colleagues, claim that electric vehicles are too expensive and that the rule would be a burden to Minnesotans. Gazelka, and the rest of his Party are wrong. They aren’t paying attention to the economics of EV ownership and they are not paying attention to consumer preferences. Way back in September 2019, Consumer Reports reported on a study of Minnesotans they had done in collaboration with the
