Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Pathway to PEACE 7-bill package advances a bold, progressive approach to U.S. foreign policy — creating a baseline for how to build peace in tangible ways, and putting our values and principles into practice.
So, what does Pathway to PEACE include?
๐A bill calling for the U.S to ratify the Rome Statute & join the International Criminal Court: the U.S. DOES NOT deserve special immunity when it commits massive breaches of international law. Joining the ICC is what actual accountability & justice look like.
๐A bill urging the U.S. to accede to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: it's EMBARRASSING that every single eligible nation (196 total) has ratified the Convention except the U.S. This shouldn't even be a debate.
๐A bill calling on the U.S. to accede to the UN Global Compact on Migration & promote the adoption of a BINDING Global Migration Agreement: this bill demands justice, accountability, & respect of migrants' human rights, rejects racism & systemic violence, and recognizes the root drivers of migration, like war and climate crises.
๐A bill requiring congressional approval of presidential economic sanctions: it's time for the U.S. to break this habit of reflexively slapping blanket sanctions on other countries with no regard for the devastating impacts on civilians. Why? Because sanctions are a tool of war.
๐A bill strengthening protections against weapons sales & military assistance to countries violating international human rights & humanitarian law: the U.S. can't say it values human rights when it's fueling major abuses via this kind of aid (i.e. arming the Saudi-UAE war in Yemen).
๐A bill redirecting war spending toward multilateral peacebuilding efforts: we can't bomb, sanction, and strong-arm our way to peace. The U.S. must use diplomacy & uplift local actors to address root causes of conflict, & raise its hand when it's one of the causes.
๐A bill extending the successful domestic YouthBuild program on youth unemployment internationally: youth around the world will continue building the pathways to peace for much longer than those currently in power, it’s time to invest in youth leadership.
