We generally like to go to the grocery store to shop because we’re likely to see someone we know. It gives us a chance to visit. But some time ago Coborn’s set up an online ordering system for people who are just too busy to go grocery shopping. Customers can select their products from Coborn’s website, designate the store they want to get their groceries at, and pick them up at a time that they arrange online.
I’m sure the company didn’t have this horrid virus in mind when they set the system up but it works perfectly. Now, since we love our friends, we only want to see them from a distance. So, earlier this week we signed up for ordering on-line at shop.coborns.com.

We had to open an account. That took about fifteen minutes. Then we decided what day and time we wanted get our groceries. A day before we wanted to pick up we wrote up a grocery list as if we were going to town. Then we went to Coborn’s website. They have everything organized by department. But I preferred using the search function. I simply typed in the brand of cottage cheese - or whatever - I wanted and up came an image of my product plus the price. Slick! I added it to my shopping cart and moved onto the next product until I’d ordered everything we needed.
The shopping cart totals your order but the store doesn’t charge your credit or debit card until they actually fill your order. They were out of two items, so our final bill was reduced.
We chose to pick up our groceries between 10 a.m. and noon. Coborn’s suggests calling ahead to be sure that your order is ready. Ours was.
There is a parking slot for pick-ups near the Little Dukes entrance. Once you’re there call the service counter and somebody will bring your order to your car. We have a land line so we called before we left home and gave them an estimated arrival time.
The nice thing about this system is that both you and the store employees have minimal contact with each other. We need to protect ourselves as well as people that are still working.
This kind of distance shopping can be done elsewhere. We ordered our seed potatoes from the Browerville co-op over the phone and they left them on the loading dock.
